About North Carolina
Home to Pepsi, Krispy Kreme, and the furniture capital of the world, North Carolina has become a state to watch this election despite the Republican party’s historical domination both in the legislature and presidential electoral results. The so called “Research Triangle,” centered at Raleigh and named for three major research universities, is a growing Democratic stronghold fueled by college students, non-white voters, and college educated residents, according to the Washington Post. North Carolina’s more rural areas have been able to maintain Republican dominance thus far, with the exception of a slim Obama victory in 2008. Although the number of registered Democrats outnumbers registered Republicans by more than 400,000 voters, the more than 2 million unaffiliated voters have the potential to swing the state either way.
